Senior Data Scientist
AI/ML for Molecular Innovation | Beauty & Functional Beverages
Location: Remote / Hybrid
We are building an AIfirst company discovering and confirming novel molecules for the beauty and functional beverage industries and we are hiring a Senior Data Scientist to own AI/ML from day one.
This is a handson IC role reporting directly to senior leadership (VP Product / CTO). You will define the AI roadmap, architect proprietary models and datasets, and build the data science function from zero.
What You will Do
Build Proprietary Molecular Models
Design, train, and deploy productiongrade, closedsource ML/DL models for molecular property prediction, compound screening, bioactivity modeling, and generative molecular design (e.g., GNNs, molecular transformers, VAEs, diffusion models).
Create a Synthetic Data Advantage
Architect synthetic data pipelines using physicsinformed simulation, molecular augmentation, and generative approaches. Turn assays, formulation trials, and experiments into proprietary datasets that compound in value.
Own the EndtoEnd ML Stack
Select and implement the full ML toolchain across data storage, experimentation, model management, cloud infrastructure, and deployment optimized for startup speed, cost, and defensibility (AWS/GCP/Azure; Docker/Kubernetes).
Partner with Scientists & Leadership
Work closely with wetlab scientists, formulation chemists, and flavor scientists to embed model predictions into real R&D decisions. Present AI strategy, results, and investment cases to executive leadership and the board.
Build the Team
Assist in hiring and mentoring the data science team and define the hiring roadmap as the company scales.
What Success Looks Like (Year 1)
- Production ML models actively informing molecular and formulation decisions
- Repeatable synthetic data pipelines that materially improve model performance
- One or more proprietary datasets that grow with every experiment
- A clear AI roadmap aligned with product and business milestones
Qualifications
Required
- Ph.D. or M.S. in C.S., ML, Computational Chemistry, Bioinformatics, or a related quantitative field
- 7+ years in applied ML, with experience shipping production ML systems
- Endtoend ownership from problem framing through deployment and iteration
- Strong Python and ML stack experience (PyTorch/TF, scikitlearn, pandas; MLflow or W&B)
- Handson experience with at least two of: GNNs, molecular transformers, VAEs, diffusion models, RL for molecular optimization, QSAR/QSPR
- Experience building datasets from scratch and operating in datascarce environments
- Cloud ML infrastructure experience; Docker/Kubernetes
- Cheminformatics fluency (RDKit, SMILES, SELFIES, molecular fingerprints)
- Strong communicator comfortable influencing senior, nontechnical stakeholders
Preferred
- Beauty, cosmetics, food science, flavor/fragrance, or functional beverage domain experience
- Early data scientist at a startup
- Regulatory familiarity (FDA, EU Cosmetics Regulation, GRAS)
- Published research in computational chemistry or AI for molecular design
- LLMs/NLP for scientific literature or patent analysis
- Highthroughput screening or labintheloop ML workflows
- Experience supporting IP protection around ML models or training methodologies
