Clinical Coding Specialist/DRG Coding Lead
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced Clinical Coding Specialist / DRG Coding Lead to support and enhance enterprise healthcare coding operations, clinical data assets, and medical coding standardization initiatives. This role requires strong expertise in medical coding, DRG methodologies, healthcare classifications, clinical terminology management, and healthcare data governance.
The ideal candidate will possess relevant coding certifications, strong analytical and leadership skills, and experience working with clinical data, coding standards, and healthcare reference datasets across multiple healthcare markets. This position will collaborate closely with Data Science, Product, Operations, and Clinical teams to maintain and expand medical coding assets, schemas, annotations, and healthcare knowledge repositories.
Key Responsibilities:
Clinical Coding & DRG Management
- Apply advanced knowledge of medical coding systems, DRG methodologies, reimbursement models, and coding guidelines.
- Analyze DRG assignment logic, coding quality, and factors impacting reimbursement and clinical outcomes.
- Support coding operations and ensure adherence to healthcare coding standards and regulatory requirements.
- Create, maintain, and validate code mappings, crosswalks, and equivalency relationships across coding systems.
Clinical Asset Management
- Support the development, enhancement, and maintenance of clinical coding assets and healthcare reference datasets.
- Research and integrate international and regional healthcare coding classifications, terminologies, and standards.
- Manage healthcare code sets, value sets, drug directories, medical device classifications, and risk adjustment tools.
- Maintain metadata, schemas, taxonomies, and clinical data structures used across healthcare platforms.
Data Governance & Standardization
- Collaborate with Data Science teams on new asset ingestion, validation, and deployment processes.
- Participate in data assessment, schema design, and data model standardization activities across multiple markets.
- Create and maintain healthcare schemas, properties, mappings, and reference structures.
- Ensure consistency, accuracy, and integrity of clinical coding data assets.
Stakeholder & Vendor Management
- Engage with internal and external stakeholders to support coding initiatives and healthcare data programs.
- Manage licensing requirements associated with coding standards and reference datasets.
- Coordinate with external vendors and standards organizations regarding licensing, acquisitions, and compliance requirements.
- Gather business requirements and provide reporting related to coding assets and healthcare standards.
Team Leadership
- Lead and mentor a team of 23 coding professionals.
- Provide guidance, quality reviews, and support for coding-related activities.
- Manage coding deliverables, priorities, and market-specific initiatives while ensuring operational excellence.
Required Qualifications
- 46 years of experience in Clinical Coding, Medical Coding Operations, Healthcare Data Management, or related fields.
- Relevant coding certification such as CPC, CCS, RHIA, RHIT, CIC, or equivalent.
- Strong understanding of DRG methodologies, coding standards, and reimbursement frameworks.
- Experience working with healthcare coding systems such as ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, SNOMED CT, LOINC, or similar standards.
- Proven experience creating and maintaining coding crosswalks and reference mappings.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and data interpretation skills.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and client-facing skills.
- Experience leading teams and managing coding operations across multiple markets.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience supporting healthcare data science, analytics, or AI-driven healthcare initiatives.
- Knowledge of risk adjustment methodologies and healthcare quality reporting programs.
- Experience working with international healthcare coding standards and classifications.
- Familiarity with healthcare data governance, terminology management, and clinical informatics.
- Experience working with healthcare datasets, data models, and clinical asset repositories.
