Firewall Configuration Specialist (Network Security Engineer)
Freelancer - Part Time.
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced Firewall Configuration Specialist to join our IT and Security team. The successful candidate will be responsible for configuring, managing, and securing enterprise firewall environments to protect critical business systems and sensitive healthcare and medical billing data. This role requires strong expertise in network security, firewall administration, threat prevention, and compliance best practices.
Key Responsibilities
- Configure, deploy, and maintain enterprise firewall solutions (Fortinet, Cisco ASA/Firepower, Palo Alto, SonicWall, Check Point, or similar).
- Design and implement firewall policies, access control lists (ACLs), NAT rules, and VPN configurations.
- Monitor firewall performance, security events, and network traffic for suspicious activities.
- Perform security assessments and recommend improvements to strengthen network defenses.
- Troubleshoot firewall, VPN, and network connectivity issues.
- Ensure compliance with healthcare data security requirements, including HIPAA and other applicable regulations.
- Collaborate with IT teams to implement secure network architectures and segmentation strategies.
- Maintain documentation of firewall configurations, security policies, and change management procedures.
- Conduct regular firewall audits, firmware updates, and security patch management.
- Support incident response activities related to network security threats and vulnerabilities.
Required Qualifications
- 5+ years of hands-on experience configuring and managing enterprise firewall solutions.
- Strong knowledge of TCP/IP, routing, switching, VLANs, VPNs, NAT, and network protocols.
- Experience with firewall platforms such as Fortinet, Palo Alto, Cisco, SonicWall, or Check Point.
- Understanding of cybersecurity frameworks, security best practices, and threat mitigation techniques.
- Experience implementing network security controls in regulated environments.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Excellent communication and documentation abilities.
Preferred Qualifications
- Firewall or security certifications (Fortinet NSE, Palo Alto PCNSA/PCNSE, Cisco CCNP Security, Check Point CCSA/CCSE, etc.).
- Experience with intrusion prevention systems (IPS), SIEM tools, and endpoint security solutions.
- Knowledge of healthcare IT environments and HIPAA compliance requirements.
- Familiarity with cloud security and hybrid network environments.
