Project Associate

The Centre of Excellence for Road Safety (CoERS), RBG Labs, IIT Madras, is a think tank supported by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, Government of India. CoERS provides technical guidance and implementation support to governments and institutions across India to improve road safety outcomes.

We work with state governments, district administrations, police departments, transport authorities, engineers, healthcare professionals and other stakeholders to design and implement evidence-based interventions that save lives on Indian roads.

Utilizing a multidisciplinary approach, we adhere to the principle of an Integrated Systems approach, focusing on the 5Es: Engineering, Enforcement, Emergency, and Education, bolstered by Empathy (Human Factors). Our mission is to enhance road safety on both a national and global scale, with a firm commitment to saving lives.

About the Role

This is an implementation-focused role for individuals who enjoy working with people, solving problems and driving change on the ground.

As a Project Associate, you will work closely with senior government officials and multidisciplinary stakeholders to support the implementation of CoERS' road safety programmes across India. You will help translate recommendations into action, facilitate collaboration across departments, build stakeholder capacity and contribute towards measurable reductions in road crash fatalities and injuries.

This role is ideal for someone who is equally comfortable in a District Collector's office, conducting a stakeholder workshop, undertaking field visits, and following up persistently to ensure agreed actions are implemented.

Key Responsibilities

Government Engagement and Stakeholder Management

  • Build and maintain professional relationships with government officials and key stakeholders.
  • Engage regularly with District Collectors, Superintendents of Police, Transport Commissioners, Secretaries, engineers, health officials and other decision-makers.
  • Organise and facilitate meetings to drive consensus and action on road safety priorities.
  • Represent CoERS in meetings, workshops and consultations with external stakeholders.

Programme Implementation

  • Support the implementation of CoERS' road safety programmes across states and districts.
  • Coordinate with multiple departments to ensure agreed action points are translated into action.
  • Follow up proactively to resolve bottlenecks and maintain programme momentum.
  • Monitor implementation progress against defined timelines and objectives.
  • Maintain programme documentation and implementation records.

Capacity Building and Training

  • Design, coordinate and deliver trainings, orientation programmes and workshops for government stakeholders.
  • Develop presentations and training material tailored to diverse audiences.
  • Support stakeholders in understanding and adopting best practices in road safety.

Field Assessments and Technical Support

  • Support in field visits to understand implementation challenges and opportunities.
  • Support activities such as road safety assessments, field surveys, blackspot investigations and infrastructure reviews.
  • Contribute to identifying safety concerns and recommending practical solutions based on standards and good practices.
  • Collaborate with technical experts within CoERS to support evidence-based interventions.

Reporting and Communication

  • Prepare meeting notes, reports, presentations and official correspondence.
  • Develop concise updates for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Document progress, outcomes and lessons learned from programme implementation.

Eligibility Criteria

Essential Qualifications

  • Master's degree from a recognised university.

Preferred Educational Background

Experience

  • Minimum 2-5 years of relevant work experience.
  • Experience working with government departments, public programmes, consulting, development sector organisations, infrastructure projects, capacity building initiatives or stakeholder engagement assignments will be preferred.

  • Familiarity with programme monitoring and reporting.
  • Knowledge of road safety principles and systems approaches.

Travel Requirement

This role is based at IIT Madras, Chennai.

The position involves extensive travel across India (approximately 60% of the time). Candidates should be comfortable with frequent field visits, including travel to districts and state capitals, sometimes at short notice.
